Diabetic Foot Exams

A comprehensive examination to identify high-risk conditions related to diabetes that can lead to foot complications.

What Is a Diabetic Foot Exam?

A diabetic foot exam is a comprehensive examination that aims to identify high-risk conditions related to diabetes that can lead to foot complications, such as ulcers and infections, potentially resulting in amputation if left untreated.

Our comprehensive evaluation typically involves several key components:

  1. Neurological examination: This involves testing the sensitivity in your feet using a monofilament wire or tuning fork. It checks for peripheral neuropathy, a common condition in diabetics where the nerves in the foot become damaged, leading to loss of sensation.

  1. Vascular assessment: We will assess the blood flow to your feet by checking the pulses in your feet and legs. We may also use a doppler ultrasound device to listen to the blood flow. This test identifies peripheral arterial disease, another diabetes-related condition that can reduce the blood supply to your feet and hinder wound healing.

  2. Dermatological inspection: We’ll examine your skin and nails for any changes, such as dry or cracked skin, calluses, corns, blisters, fungal infections, or other abnormalities that could potentially lead to ulcers.

  3. Foot deformity evaluation: We will check for foot deformities like bunions, hammertoes, or Charcot foot, which can create pressure points leading to ulcers.

  4. Footwear assessment: We will evaluate your shoes for correct fit and appropriateness. Improper footwear can create pressure points and contribute to foot issues.

  5. Patient education: The assessment often includes education about daily foot care, appropriate footwear, signs of problems to watch for, and when to seek further help.

Based on the results of this assessment, we’ll classify your risk for developing foot complications and create a personalised management and prevention plan for you.
