Setting your child up for an active, healthy and pain-free life ahead.
A children's podiatry assessment is a comprehensive examination of a child's lower limbs (feet, ankles, knees, and hips) to identify and address any issues affecting their mobility, comfort, or overall foot health. This assessment is crucial as children's feet and legs undergo various stages of growth and development, which can sometimes lead to abnormalities or conditions that may affect their gait and posture. Here's what's generally involved:
Medical History: We start by reviewing your child's medical history, including any existing health conditions, previous injuries, and family history of foot or leg problems. We’ll also inquire about your child's physical activities and footwear.
Physical Examination: We’ll examine your child's feet and legs for any signs of abnormalities, such as flat feet, in-toeing, out-toeing, or walking on tiptoes. They'll assess your child's gait, posture, and balance, and will check for any issues with the skin or nails.
Mobility and Strength Testing: This involves assessing the child's muscle strength, flexibility, and joint mobility in the lower limbs. We may ask your child to perform certain movements or exercises to evaluate these areas.
Footwear Assessment: We will evaluate the child's shoes for proper fit, support, and wear patterns. Improper footwear can contribute to foot issues.
Gait Analysis: The child's walking pattern will be assessed. We use a special treadmill and video device to identify any abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Based on the findings of the assessment, we’ll develop a personalised treatment plan, which may include exercises, orthotics, footwear recommendations, or referral to other specialists for further treatment.
The goal of a children's podiatry assessment is to ensure healthy foot and lower limb development, and to address any issues that could impact a child's mobility and quality of life.
